Artist Statement

Art is an important and intricate part of my life.  I have discovered that to suppress, abandon or ignore my need to create on a regular basis is a sure means to an unhappy, unhealthy and unfulfilled end.  For me, the process of creating art balances polar characteristics and feelings - that of wanting to escape the world and that of needing to connect with the world.  Art is the radiating point that serves as a guide, bringing these contradictions together, to one place.  There, I can experience and express varying degrees of extremes within a place that feels like my “center”.

I approach most of my work with a concentrated focus on technique and a prepared design or sketch.  However, I don’t always work in a strict, disciplined manner.  I allow myself the freedom to meander from the original plan.  Unexpected results that occur while creating art mimic the randomness of what we experience in life and I welcome them.  As in life, the unexpected can often challenge assumptions and change the direction of the work itself.
